#1. Sherlock Holmes

Most of you know of or have heard of the infamous Sherlock Holmes, and for a good reason. Many would call Mr. Holmes the world's finest detective; his methods of observation and detecting are phenomenal. If you were to meet him on the street, you would think he was a magician or, in this day and age, a psychic. Sherlock Holmes could look at you and give a full account of your daily schedule, what you ate for lunch, etc. Many of his accomplices, such as the Dr. John Watson, were astounded at his level of ascertainment. With his career as the world's only Consulting Detective, he has deciphered and solved some of the most challenging and perplexing mysteries in existence. 

#2. Bilbo Baggins

Again, another famous figure in the world of fiction, Bilbo Baggins is in the top ten for a reason. He stars as the main character in the almost century old novel, The Hobbit. Bilbo grows up in the luscious green Shire of Middle Earth and is unacquainted with the fears and dangers of the outside world. When an old, well-known wizard comes to his door in search of help, he cautiously yields to an exciting adventure. Throughout the book, Bilbo grows in courage, confidence, and strength throughout his journey. When he returns home he has faced orcs, elves, goblins, a dragon named Smaug, and more.

#3. Harry Potter

Of course, we have Harry Potter. Harry is an orphan who is badly mistreated in his home life. He felt no love or happiness with the relatives that he lived with. You can imagine how that could have crippled and damaged his character, but he stood strong. When he received his letter of acceptance to Hogwarts, a school of magic, he flourished. Harry made friends for the first time in his life, and together they defeated the world's deadliest villain; Lord Voldemort. A real "from rags to riches" story.

#4. Lucy Pevensie

Lucy Pevensie is a sweet, innocent young girl whose trust seems limitless. In The Chronicles of Narnia, she is the one who finds and introduces the magical world to her doubtful siblings. Lucy is a persistent, brave, loyal, and faithful hero in the series. She goes through many trials, learning something from each one of them. Her childlike innocence makes her even more lovable, as she is the one who is closest to the "wise old guide", Aslan.

In the timeless, but ever-loved novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus Finch is sometimes overlooked. As the main character's father, at first it seems like he's just a boring old man with glasses. But Atticus is much more. He's a loving, kind, fair, and logical man, along with being a brave, loyal, and wonderful dad. Atticus has many hidden talents that make him such a wonderful character.

As one of the four "Little Women", Jo March is quite a character. Her stubbornness and motivation keep everyone in line. She has a knack for writing, and her fierce love and support for her family is endless. Through the book Jo grows in motivation, strength, and understanding, and much more.

#7. Anne Shirley

Anne (of Green Gables) was orphaned at a very young age. By a lucky accident, she arrived at Green Gables. While there, she inspired others, made lots of new friends, and helped other people far and wide. Through all her mistakes and errors, she learned a lot, and overall made life better and easier for those all around her.

#8. Agatha of the Woods Beyond

Agatha stars as one of the main characters in Soman Chainani's School for Good and Evil book series. As an introverted, quiet, and awkward girl living in a graveyard, she is a hopeless cause... Until she gets put into the School for Good and is put to the test. Agatha's spirit is lifted, and she no longer looks down on herself. Alongside her prince and best friends, they defeat whatever evil comes their way.
