Teen Review: Story Thieves
What if you could travel through stories?
Would you go through all your favorite novels, interacting
with all the characters?
Story Thieves by James Riley explores that possibility. Bethany, a half-fictional girl, has the power to travel through stories at will, however she avoids it and tries to hide her ability. One day, she travels into the book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to grab some chocolate while in class. Her classmate Owen takes the book while Bethany is still inside of it and brings the book to his mom's library. To his surprise, Bethany pops out of it. When he learns about her power, he demands that she take him into his favorite book, Kiel Gnomenfoot. She agrees, not knowing that secretly Owen plans to change the story, which is against her rules of book traveling, and would put his and her names in the book.
Will Owen successfully change Kiel Gnomenfoot, rewriting the entire book and fulfilling his dream of being a hero, but exposing Bethany's power? Or will Bethany stop him in time? You'll have to read the book to find out.
Story Thieves is an amazing sci-fi, fantasy and realistic fiction book that explores the fascinating possibility of a world where you can travel through stories. The book focuses on Owen and Bethany's adventures, cleanly swapping through both points of view. It makes a perfect story, where we learn that traveling through books is more dangerous than it may seem. This story is very intense, as is shown by near-death experiences with deadly robots, but is also humorous enough to include a flying cat.
With a captivating story and well-crafted secondary characters such as Charm, the half-robot, and Kiel, the magic apprentice. In the book, Bethany learns that traveling through books can be fun and Owen learns that traveling through books can be very dangerous. However, they both go on amazing adventures together; they put fictional characters back in their books and defeat an evil scientist.
I would recommend this book to fans of fantasy, realistic
fiction, and science fiction. If you are looking for a story with intriguing
characters, you'll love Charm, Kiel, Bethany, and Owen. If you want a captivating story-line and
aspects of humor, like flying cats, this book is for you! The best news is that when you finish the first book, more books in the same series await.
