What if our universe was part of a much larger multiverse?

What if you had a chance to travel through that multiverse?

Sal and Gabi Fix the Universe explores such a world.  Sal and Gabi Fix the Universe is written by Carlos Hernandez and is the sequel to Sal and Gabi Break the Universe. It has elements of both scientific fiction and realistic fiction. The main characters are Sal Vidon, a diabetic, Cuban-American teenager and his friend Gabi Real, who both live in Miami, Florida. The author chose this setting because he lived three hours away as a child and knew it well.

Sal has the ability to travel, pull objects from and view other realities known as the multiverse. The book begins with Sal starting his quantum physicist father's Rembrantion machine to repair the universe and fix holes that were caused by Sal in the first book. Using the machine, Sal begins correctly closing the holes in the multiverse. Suddenly, Sal finds a Gabi from another universe who warns him not to let his father close the multiverse because fixing the holes destroys her Earth and her Sal. Is this new Gabi who she seems to be? Is her plan really trustworthy? Read the book to find out.

Overall, Sal and Gabi Fix the Universe is an enjoyable and exciting book. I enjoyed the action in this book. There were adventures in the multiverse, different versions of Gabi, and a locker containing a wormhole. However, the author often ignores the plot and focuses on the mundane aspects of this perfectly crafted world full of unique characters. The book has many unnecessary plot lines and minor characters which often distract the reader from the main plot.

The author successfully combines realistic fiction and science fiction in a way that results in an amazing story. The realistic fiction shows Sal and Gabi's normal lives as teenagers going to school and playing video games. The science fiction is shown through their travels through the multiverse. The two elements merge well and complement each other effectively. The author convincingly utilizes teen language such as memes and emojis throughout this captivating story. This makes the story unique and caters to his teenage audience. He also uses humor throughout the book. We see this humor through toilets that can talk and machines that can text. The book ends with a cliffhanger, but resolves the important parts.  Sal and Gabi Fix the Universe is an amazing book. Its only weakness is its tendency to lose focus and become distracted from the main plot.

Fans of Rick Riordan would enjoy Sal and Gabi Fix The Universe. This book was published through Rick Riordan's publishing company known as Rick Riordan Presents. The company seeks to publish books about and by authors with and from underrepresented backstories and cultures.

I have had the privilege of meeting Carlos Hernandez at Tweens Read, a local event that connects readers and authors. He was very entertaining, just like his books are. If you are looking for a sci-fi book, with aspects of both realistic fiction and humor, then Sal and Gabi Fix the Universe and its predecessor, Sal and Gabi Break the Universe are the books for you.
